2008年7月25日，就在十几天以前，Randy Frederick Pausch教授因胰腺癌在家中病逝，去年9月他在卡内基梅隆大学进行了人生中最后一次演讲，内容并非他的专业虚拟现实技术，而是关于如何实现童年梦想，如何度过无悔的一生。这次演讲受到空间的欢迎，据说视频下载次数已逾千万，我很高兴的在这个数字上增加了微不足道的一次。
所谓“人之将死，其言也善”，当然演讲本身是非常好的，不过我倒也觉得如果不是在这种情况下也未必会引起如此的关注，然后当我们开始注意时，已经不能再听到他的只言片语了，这种悖论对于尚在人世的我们来说应该是一个警醒：去倾听别人的意见吧，趁他们还在发表意见。
这最后一课的场面并不十分严肃，反而是笑声不断，不过我就不在此描述Randy的搞笑天赋了，只是记下他最后的一些教训：
The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people. 砖墙不是要挡住我们。砖墙是要给我们机会说明我们有多迫切的想得到。因为砖墙是要阻挡那些不诚心的人，那些其他人。
Help others. 帮助他人。
Never lose the childlike wonder. It’s just too important. It’s what drives us. 不要失去童年梦想，它太重要了，它驱使我们向前进。
Loyalty is a two way street. 忠诚是相互的。
Never give up. 永不放弃。
You can’t get there alone. People have to help you. 你不能单打独斗。你需要人来帮你。
Apologize when you screw up. 当你做砸了，道歉。
Get a feedback loop and listen to it. 得到并听取反馈。
Show gratitude. 表达谢意。
Don’t complain. 不要抱怨。
Work hard. 努力工作。
Find the best in everybody. One of the things that Jon Snoddy as I said told me is that you might have to wait a long time, sometimes years, but people will show you their good side. Just keep waiting no matter how long it takes. No one is all evil. Everybody has a good side, just keep waiting, it will come out. 每个人都有闪光点。我提到的乔恩.史诺地曾告诉我说，人们会向你展示自己善的一面，但你可能要等待很长的时间，有时甚至好几年才能见到。但不论多久都要等待。没人是完全邪有暗香盈袖恶。每一个人都有善的一面，只要继续等待，它就会显现。
And be prepared. Luck is truly where preparation meets opportunity. 有所准备。运气真的是机会与准备的结合。
